My work has been rather sporadic over the past four years – I have been concentrating on writing my first two books. This is just a selection of what I have been dabbling with.

Colour Columns
V
essels ranging from 4 – 7ft tall

Constructed from heavy pelmet Vilene that needs little support and has a heat bondable glue on one side. The heavy interfacing was colourwashed with Procion dye powder on both sides and hand dyed silk fibres were then applied to the ‘sticky’ side to create a basic ‘landscape’ effect.

 Earth Jewels
5ft tall

This vessel has been created from layers of heavyweight Lutradur130/CS800 that are supported on a layer of heavy pelmet Vilene. The Lutradur/CS800 has been coloured with procion dye powder and then heat gunned to create a lacy edge. These edges were then overlapped, machine stitched into place and decorated with painted Bondaweb.

A bit of fluff
15” tall

This one of my favourite little vessels. Just silk fibres pasted over a mould.

   ICE & Party Girl
5ft tall

These vessels are bit older. ‘Ice’ is constructed for layers of clear cellophane that have been ironed and heat gunned to create the ‘vessel’ shape. ‘Party Girl’ is made in a similar way with the plastic floral sleeves that come around pot plants.

Capstones
7ft wide

Again this is a bit older but a favourite. A very simple design from a drawing of end capping stones on a wall in Cornwall. Acrylic painted and dyed pelmet Vilene machine stitched onto the black cotton background.

Torn
24” x 12”

I have been mad on printed, dyed and torn papers since doing a wonderful Summer School with Ruth Issett 2 years ago. There is even some hand stitch in the piece.

Ripped (detail)

More delicious printed and dyed papers . . . . .

Signs 1
15” x 9”

This piece was created on a Summer School with Jan Evans – a member of the Practical Study Group. We used graphite, tracing paper, tissue and lots of gesso and texture gels. It was a wonderfully sticky week.

Signs 2 & 3
36” x 24”

Two more pieces that were created with Jan Evans in 2008. We developed designs using squares, spirals, crosses, circles and triangles. These particular pieces have been printed, appliquéd and stitched using pelmet Vilene, calico and viscose satin.
